EASY WONTON SOUP

I’m not sure what the weather is like where you are but here it’s darn right frigid today. Minus 21 degrees Celcius or -33 with the wind chill to be exact! I am so not a cold-weather person so on days like this I am quite happy to stay inside and make soup and this easy wonton soup really hits the spot!

It takes only about 15 minutes to make yet tastes as delicious as any you’d get at a restaurant. It was inspired by a recipe I saw on Punch Spoon, but I have made a few adjustments to accommodate my tastes. I also added noodles which I know is not traditional in a wonton soup but, hey, I like noodles. What can I say?

What Ingredients Do I Need

  • Store-bought frozen wontons – My favorites are chicken and leek wontons but feel free to use whatever you like.
  • Baby bok choy – Cut in half lengthwise.
  • Packaged ramen noodles – Optional. You can also use rice noodles.
  • Low-sodium chicken stock – I prefer using a low-sodium so I can adjust the salt to my tastes.
  • Soy sauce – Regular or low-sodium is fine.
  • Sesame oil – Adds a little nutty flavor.
  • Fresh cilantro – Chopped for garnish.
  • Green onions – Sliced for garnish.

How Do I Make Wonton Soup

  • Boil stock – Bring the chicken stock and 1 cup (236ml) of water to a boil.
  • Add ingredients – Add the bok choy, wontons, and noodles if using and bring the soup back to a boil.

  • Add Water – When the wontons float to the top, add a cup (236ml) of cold water and bring the soup back to a boil. When the wontons float to the top again, add the soy sauce and sesame oil.
  • Garnish and serve – When the wontons are fully cooked and the bok choy has wilted it is ready to serve. Pour into bowls and garnish with the cilantro and green onions.

Variations;

This dumpling soup recipe is very easy to customize. You can make it vegetarian by using vegetable broth instead of chicken. You can also swap out the wontons for vegetable-filled dumplings. Also, feel free to add any vegetables you have in the fridge. This is a great clean-out-the-fridge kind of soup. I also sometimes use different types of noodles like rice noodles in place of ramen noodles.

What does wonton soup mean in Chinese? Wonton comes from the Cantonese word "wantan" or "wahn tan" which means "cloud swallow" because the dumplings float like small clouds in the broth when they are cooked. 

What is the difference between Chinese dumpling soup and wonton soup? The main difference is that wontons are always filled with a meat or vegetable filling whereas dumplings can be filled or the filling mixture can be mixed in with the dough before they are formed into dumplings. 

Can you eat the white parts of bok choy? Yes! All the parts of bok choy, both the green and white stem, can be eaten.

Ingredients
  

  • 8-12 Store bought Wontons (I used frozen chicken & leek wontons)
  • 4-6 Small bok choy cut in half lengthwise
  • 1 Small package ramen noodles (optional)
  • 3 Cups Low sodium chicken stock
  • 2 Cups Water, divided
  • 1 Tbsp Low sodium or regular soy sauce
  • 1/2 Tbsp Sesame oil
  • 2 Tbsp Chopped fresh cilantro
  • 2 Tbsp Sliced green onions

Instructions
 

  • Bring the chicken stock and 1 cup of water to a boil.

  • When the wontons are fully cooked and the bok choy has wilted it is ready to serve.
  • Pour into bowls αnd garnish with the cilαntro αnd green onions.

  8. Double ramen packs with seasoning, only 1 cup of water more chicken stock, add oyster sauce (very bland) and double wontons (mine were small)
