  • So easy and quick to make.
  • It’s better quality than store-bought packages which can contain filler ingredients and added sugar and fats.

What Ingredients Do I Need

You only need a few ingredients to make this homemade hot chocolate most of which you probably have in your pantry.

  • Milk – For the richest taste use whole milk but you could also use whatever you have in your fridge.
  • Cocoa powder – For the best results use the best quality you can afford.
  • Sugar – I use regular granulated white sugar but you could use whatever you have on hand.
  • Dark chocolate – You want at least 70%.

Toppings (optional)

This hot chocolate will be delicious on its own but for extra indulgence, I like to add a topping (or two!). Some of my favorites are;

  • Chantilly cream – A sweetened whipped cream. Find my recipe here.
  • Whipped cream
  • Chocolate shavings
  • Marshmallows – Feel free to use either baby marshmallows or regular-sized sized. Both will work.

How To Make This Hot Chocolate

  • Combine ingredients – Mix sugar with cocoa powder and blend well.
  • Make sauce – Add 30 ml (2 tbsp) milk to the cocoa powder and sugar mixture. Stir well until it’s smooth.

  • Chop chocolate – Using a sharp knife cut the chocolate into smaller pieces so it melts quickly.
  • Heat milk – Stirring frequently, heat the milk over medium-low heat until it’s hot but not boiling.

  • Add sauce – Add the chocolate sauce to the heated milk and stir until it’s well combined.
  • Add Chocolate – Add the chopped chocolate to the mixture and stir until it’s completely melted and well combined.

Serve – Pour into mugs and top with your favorite topping.

Recipe Tips and Tricks For Success

  • Make sure not to allow the milk to come to a boil.
  • Chop chocolate into small pieces so it melts more easily.
  • Stir the hot chocolate mixture well until it’s completely combined.

Recipe Variations

You can customize this hot chocolate in multiple ways. I find this recipe sweet enough for me but feel free to adjust the amount of sugar to suit your taste. Sometimes I add pure vanilla extract or cinnamon for an extra flavor boost. Peppermint extract would also be fun for the holidays. To make a Mexican hot chocolate try adding a little cayenne pepper for a bit of spice. You could also make this hot chocolate with flavored milk. Why not try strawberry-flavored milk for a fun change?

Recipe Substitutions

Most good quality cocoa powders are vegan and gluten-free but if you want to make a vegan or dairy-free hot chocolate you can use your favorite non-dairy milk. You will also want to use vegan chocolate.

Storage Tips

This is best drunk right away but if you have leftovers they will keep in a covered container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Make sure to store it before you add any toppings.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS;

Is there a lot of caffeine in hot chocolate? Most packaged hot chocolate mixes don't contain a lot of caffeine, however hot chocolate made from cocoa powder is higher in caffeine. That's because cocoa powder is made from cocoa beans which contain caffeine.
