AIR FRYER PITA CHIPS

Pita chips are a delicious accompaniment to serve with dips for an easy appetizer. I love to make them ahead of time so I have a quick appetizer to serve when people drop over. They store well for up to a week and are a delicious way to scoop up your favorite dips. Some of my favorite dips to serve them with are hummus, roasted red pepper dip, or my authentic Greek tzatziki sauce.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • You only need 3 ingredients. Pita bread, EVOO, and sea salt.
  • It’s an extremely versatile recipe. Add any of your favorite herbs or spices to mix things up.
  • Pita chips can be made in 10 minutes or less.
  • They’re healthier than store-bought chips.

What Ingredients Do I Need?

This recipe calls for just 3 ingredients however you can customize it with extra herbs or spices if you prefer.

For the basic recipe you’ll need;

  • Pita bread -I use whole wheat.
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Salt – I prefer sea salt but you could use any other kind of salt.

How To Make Pita Chips

  • Oil the pita. Brush both sides of each piece lightly with olive oil.
  • Cut the pita bread. Start by cutting each pita in half. Then cut each half into half again. Finish by cutting each 1/4 in half again. (Alternatively, you can cut each triangle into small squares for easy one-bite pieces as pictured in the last photo.)
  • Sprinkle with salt.
  • Bake. Add the chips to your air fryer in a single layer and bake for 3-4 minutes at 350F. Flip the chips and bake for 1-2 minutes longer.

Recipe Tips and Tricks For Success

  • Don’t overcrowd the chips. For pita triangles, it’s best to place them in a single layer. If you are making smaller pieces you can add a few more and shake the basket halfway through instead of turning each piece over.
  • Don’t overcook. Over-cooking will make the chips too crispy. Check them after a few minutes and add more time as needed.

Recipe Variations

This recipe is extremely versatile. Feel free to add any of your favorite herbs or spices to the olive oil before brushing it on the pita bread. Some of my favorite additions are;

  • Chopped garlic or garlic salt
  • Chopped Rosemary
  • Cumin
  • Za’atar
  • Oregano
  • Parsley
  • Dried basil
  • Paprika

Storage Tips

While these are so delicious it’s unlikely you’ll have any leftovers but if you do they can easily be stored in a ziploc bag or plastic container with a lid. They will keep for around a week.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS;

Can I make these without an air fryer? Absolutely! Just bake then on a sheet pan in a 350 degree oven for about 8-10 minutes, flipping them over half way through.

Are homemade pita chips healthy? As pita chips are baked and you can control the amount of oil and salt, they are healthier than traditional fried chips and snacks.

What is the healthiest pita bread? Pita bread made from whole grains is healthier than plain white pita bread. In the store look for "whole wheat" pita bread.

  4. I have certainly not thought of using the air fryer to do pita chips, but the simplicity of it is really amazing. It cuts down a lot of unnecessary work and makes the whole thing much easier!
